LANDFILL GAS MIGRATION

LANDFILL GAS MIGRATION

In general, landfill gas can be directly released to the atmosphere via:

  • Gaps in clay capping layers
  • Leaks in gas collection points
  • Leaks found at leachate collection points
  • Operational areas including flares, gas transmission pipework, open wells, passive vents, open leachate sumps etc
  • Soil cap, open slopes or settlement cracks

Subsurface migration may also occur via:

  • Services trenches – stormwater drains etc
  • Sidewall and geological strata
  • Migration of dissolved gases in groundwater

By no means is this list of landfill migration points exhaustive.  Click here to add a document title that may be of interest to visitors.

NOTE:

Effective landfill surveying focuses on areas within a landfill site identified by guidelines and legislation and points of migration.  Fit for purpose equipment should be selected to ensure the quality of data collected at migration points.
