SURVEYING TECHNIQUE

STEP 1:  Your personal gas detector is NOT an acceptable survey instrument.  These devices are designed to be worn near the operators breathing zone for personal protection.  Rarely are they pumped, sensor response times are very slow, sensitivity will be limited.  (HPS consultants in Australia have participated in trials where workers were not able to detect class 1 reportable leaks with a personal gas detector even whilst standing directly over the leak.)

STEP 2:  Select a professional survey instrument, rent / lease/ or buy to be sure of the effectiveness of your survey and the integrity of your data.  Ensure your survey instrument has the sensitivity required to generate data of acceptable quality for your EPA or governing authority.  Ensure your survey instrument features an appropriate T90 response time. Calibrate your equipment.

STEP 3:  Understand how landfill gas migrates and survey accordingly

STEP 4:  Observe best practice when in the field.  Follow manufacturers’ guidelines.

STEP 5:  Report findings in a consistent and thorough manner
