LANDFILL GAS MIGRATION
LANDFILL GAS MIGRATION
In general, landfill gas can be directly released to the atmosphere via:
- Gaps in clay capping layers
- Leaks in gas collection points
- Leaks found at leachate collection points
- Operational areas including flares, gas transmission pipework, open wells, passive vents, open leachate sumps etc
- Soil cap, open slopes or settlement cracks
Subsurface migration may also occur via:
- Services trenches – stormwater drains etc
- Sidewall and geological strata
- Migration of dissolved gases in groundwater

NOTE:
Effective landfill surveying focuses on areas within a landfill site identified by guidelines and legislation and points of migration. Fit for purpose equipment should be selected to ensure the quality of data collected at migration points.
